Over a decade ago, when Dan was still a student, he watched a movie with a line that left a deep impression on him: "If the body runs too fast, the soul can’t keep up." At that time, he never imagined that this phrase would become a vivid reflection of his life after graduation. Social expectations, workplace pressures, and family obligations pushed him to keep moving forward relentlessly. There was no opportunity to stop because he wasn’t allowed to. Like a blindfolded ox running endlessly without seeing the stars or the moon, he was constantly on the move. From being a news investigative journalist to shifting careers into marketing and public relations, every job he had was fast-paced. He always felt that the depth of his thinking was limited by the fast pace and time constraints. It wasn’t until he resigned and went to the U.S. to be with his wife that he truly stopped. He had plenty of time to read and reflect—on everything that once seemed normal. The logic and thinking patterns built over the past thirty years began to collapse. He started trying things he had never done before, like participating in photography contests and learning how to build a website. He discovered the endless possibilities in the world. He even rediscovered the wind, flowers swaying in the breeze, the sound of insects, and the newly sprouted grass—his soul seemed to have caught up with him.

This idea resonates with a young girl from Wuhan, China, named Ze. Her mind is always full of imaginative and sometimes quirky thoughts. Ze once thought that “an elephant dancing” was an impressive feat, so she worked hard to join one of the top 500 companies in the world; studied diligently to get an MBA from a prestigious Chinese university; and worked in one of China’s most developed cities, saving half of the down payment for her first home while accumulating significant debt. It was only then that she realized—being the dancing elephant was exhausting!

As a dreamer, those uncontrollable ideas in Ze's mind were her mental tonic. Yet, workplace pressures caused her to gradually lose herself, substituting genuine reactions with corporate compliance and praise with mere flattery. With labels like “aging,” “single,” “in debt,” and “unfocused” forcibly attached to her, her imaginative ideas began to fade. She said, “She’s done for!”

Ze wanted to reclaim her mental tonic. Looking around, it seemed everyone was on the path of losing themselves. But the good news is, Dan is on a journey of self-discovery. The idea of personalized gifts to express oneself sounded intriguing. She realized she could integrate those unique ideas into various gifts through design, providing a powerful counterattack against the mundane. And so, she joined the team.

4. Don’t Be Afraid, When Life Hits Rock Bottom, It Will Get Better

At the same time, in Shanghai, 500 miles away from Wuhan, Belle, who had always aspired to be a powerful woman, was feeling lost due to her unfulfilled dreams. She had started companies and built teams, but success eluded her. As Dan Customify was launching, she was undergoing a major life change—losing her beloved mother to cancer and welcoming her child into the world. This enormous shock not only didn’t break her but made her stronger. When life reaches a certain level of badness, it can only get better because it can’t get worse. She said, “Many things don’t follow the rules. Since that’s the case, don’t be afraid and don’t have regrets.” Belle, once again, set sail with determination.

And so, Dan Customify set sail, destination uncertain, but it is certain that these three individuals will wholeheartedly nurture this small venture and be grateful for every traveler who boards.
